HISTOPATHOLOGY EQA SCHEMES

External quality assurance is vital for maintaining and improving histopathology performance, by education and performance surveillance

An EQA scheme involves

   - circulating slides of typical work-load standard (avoiding extremes of simplicity / obscurity)

   - the submission of diagnostic opinions (in coded anonymised form where the identifying codes are only known to a central scheme secretary)
   - a participants meeting where participants discuss all the cases

   - personal feedback letters sent in confidence  to each participant

A number of specialist EQA schemes now publish cases online as pdf / powerpoint files or on the Leeds virtual histopathology website. These are a potentially important resource for exam candidates wanting to revise a range of fairly routine but potentially challenging cases.
